Telematics data are transmitted from the vehicle to a server operated by BMW using a secure connection on a private sub-network of a mobile service provider that is only accessible tor BMW vehicles. This does not require the customer to have a private mobile phone, as communication takes place via a SIM card installed in the vehicle at the factory.

Yes. BMW collects and stores vehicle positions in anonymised form to provide traffic flow services (Floating Car Data). The FCD service is carried out to collect current information about road traffic on the existing navigation and ConnectedDrive platforms. Each ConnectedDrive-enabled vehicle constitutes a "mobile traffic reporter" (Floating Car). The positional and sensor data collected while driving these vehicles are transferred to the BMW ConnectedDrive centre and the contractually stipulated traffic service provider together with the current time information. The data are processed in completely anonymous form following their transfer. This is done free of charge. Data transfer is also deactivated as soon as the SIM card installed in the vehicle is deactivated. The traffic information service, including FCD can be deactivated by sending a written request to BMW Customer Services.

Depending on the use of ConnectedDrive services by the driver, the vehicle usually takes this decision itself. Moreover, BMW can explicitly trigger the transfer of telematics data to BMW servers for rendering ConnectedDrive services. Once your vehicle has transmitted telematics data to BMW, you can retrieve the currently saved telematics data for your BMW from the BMW CarData data archive. If no data has been transmitted, no entries will be shown in the data archive. This may apply, for example, to older vehicles without active teleservices.

If the option to start guidance is not clickable, or destinations do not show up at all in the "Messages" folder, your vehicle’s software likely needs to be updated. Please contact your local BMW dealer to inquire about getting a software update.
